Nowadays, you can find hundreds of pliers for different uses and purposes. Side cutters, end cutters, or pincers are part of the family of cutting pliers used for cutting and/or pulling.
A cutting plier consists of 2 parts:
- The handles; those of the Russian pincers are longer than those of other cutting pliers
- The cutting edges or jaws.
Side cutters, also known as diagonal cutters, are designed to cut soft and hard cables. This is why they are very useful in electrical work. They are also the most common and widely used pliers by DIY enthusiasts.
End cutters, corresponding to the shorter version of pincers, are well-known and popular. They have a rounded head with cutting edges perpendicular to the handles, primarily used for removing nails, and pins, or cutting hard cables like piano wire.
As for Russian pincers, they have a very short head with long handles and are useful for wiring work.
Our advice regarding side cutters: to amplify the leverage effect and preserve your strength (avoid straining your hand too much), position the wire as close to the hinge as possible.
