A programmer is an essential accessory for controlling energy consumption and reducing electricity bills. It allows you to set the operating times for the electrical devices in the home. This programmable outlet can be equipped with a mechanical, electronic, or remote control.
A programmer (also known as a programmable outlet) is designed to control or remotely operate the on/off phases of an electrical supply. It proves convenient for devices used over a specific period of time, such as:
- the electric heater;
- the water heater;
- indoor ventilation;
- the air purifier;
- certain indoor lighting fixtures;
- outdoor lighting;
- the automatic watering system.
A programmable outlet is used to power a given device at a set time and for a specified duration, every day or periodically throughout the week. It is available in mechanical and digital versions.
Showing a negligible consumption, the mechanical model can especially:
- be installed indoors or outdoors, but requires an IP (protection index) of at least 44 to protect it from dust and moisture;
- be programmed using pins representing time slots, daily or even weekly;
- have a precision of plus or minus 15 min for daily programs, reaching 2 hours or more for weekly time slots;
- save time and money for the buyer, as it is inexpensive and easy to find.
In general, the digital version of this outlet:
- can be used indoors as well as outdoors (with a minimum IP of 400);
- offers more programming possibilities;
- has a passive consumption of around 20mA;
- allows for finer adjustments every day or throughout the week. Moreover, the time slots can be different for each day. This feature often translates into the presence of an integrated box, equipped with an LCD screen and a few buttons.
Unlike entry-level or mid-range models, the remote-controlled programmer is part of the large family of home automation equipment. As such:
- the possibilities for controls, settings, and programming of the outlet are virtually endless;
- the outlet can be commanded remotely, using a traditional remote control on older models;
- the equipment does not necessarily require the user's presence to receive new instructions. Most of these devices are now connected and have a dedicated application.
Price is one of the main factors in choosing a programmer. Indeed, all these devices perform the same role and allow for energy savings. However, each model stands out for its various features. At this stage, it all depends on the criterion prioritized by the user.
