In homes where waste water cannot be drained by gravity alone, a pump and lifting station can be used as a reliable and durable solution to prevent your pipes from getting blocked or clogged.
Used for waste water, with or without sewage, a pump system is required when the level of the sewer connection is above the house or main pipe. Lifting stations are made up of:
- a wet well;
- one or several submersible pumps;
-a control panel.
Lifting stations operate following a basic principle: the waste water goes into the lift station where it passes through the wet well and is then sent by the pump to the discharge point. All this is controlled by a control panel using level sensors or piezo level sensors.
Your choice of lifting station will be determined by various criteria, the most important of which being the volume of the tank, the type of the water to be drained and the lifting height.
The wet well must be large enough to handle the waste water drainage of the entire household in order to avoid overloading the pump and wearing it out prematurely.
The type of the water you want to drain will determine the type of lifting station to install. For blackwater, you will have to opt for a 50 mm pump with an impeller to shred solid matter. For greywater, pumps designed for small to medium particles (5 to 20 mm and 20 to 50 mm, respectively) are best .
The lifting height allows you to choose the best type of installation (i.e. whether or not you need to bury the station).
Home owners with a lifting station should also take some safety precautions, including protecting the pumps with non-return valves and installing an alarm to indicate any possible defects or issues. It is essential to ventilate your station properly and maintain it on a regular basis.
