Looking for an economical solution to clean and maintain the exterior of your home? It exists, and has for a long time: it's the broom. There are many, with characteristics that can be quite different from one model to another. That’s why on this page you will find the best references from different brands (PERRIN, REVEX, WOLF,…). And that’s also why we have written this little practical guide on the broom, so that you can choose the model that really meets your needs.
Firstly, you should make sure to check whether the reference you intend to buy comes with a handle or not. It could be that it's only a broom head that will need to be attached to a bare handle.
Then, regarding the tool itself, you will find different types of brooms used for outdoor maintenance: the straw broom, the street sweeper broom, the coconut broom.
The first one, the straw broom, consists of a handle to which a relatively tall head (taller than it is wide) is attached, composed of long straw bristles (or bristles made of another material but which are still very long and provide a “straw-like” appearance). The head is relatively stiff and this kind of tool will be useful for sweeping up elements like leaves, which will not be able to cling to the fibers. It is really a tool for sweeping and not for cleaning.
The second (street sweeper broom) has a head that is much wider than it is tall. The specificity of this type of broom comes from the fibers that make up the head: about ten centimeters long, they are hard and stiff. This results in a product that, although it can sweep, will mainly be used for cleaning by scrubbing.
The third type (coconut broom) resembles a street sweeper broom with one difference: the fibers making up the head are quite soft. Much denser than the head of the straw broom, this kind of broom will be suitable for sweeping up small particles (such as dust). However, it will be advised against sweeping up leaves or similar items, which might cling to the fibers.
Among the determining factors, you will need to pay attention to the length of the head. The longer it is, the larger the working surface covered in one go will be. This will make work easier and also less tiring.
Finally, you will be able to choose between fibers made of different materials. Synthetic fibers will be more resistant whereas natural fibers will generally be cheaper.
