There are 3 types of door closer arms:
- The scissor arm: This is the classic arm most common today, like the compass you used in school, it has 2 parts. When the door is opened, the scissor arm opens and stretches to allow the door to pivot. It is possible to adjust the length of the scissor segments with a screw system. You can then adjust the degree of opening as you wish.
- The sliding arm or track arm: this is a system fixed along the door with 2 parts, a rail and 1 arm. The arm slides into the rail to allow the door to open. The biggest advantage of this installation is that it is very discreet. Placed along the door with the arm retracting into the rail, it is almost invisible.
- The ratchet arm: this arm is equipped with a mechanical stop, which is the only feature that distinguishes it from the scissor arm. The scissor arm and the ratchet arm are visually identical. This single difference still has a significant impact. Indeed, any door closer equipped with a stop system loses its fire door compliance.
If an arm not intended to be installed on a door closer model is eventually installed, there is a high chance that the installation will also be faulty and non-compliant with the laws regulating this fire door compliance.
