Garden sheds : make the right choice

Used as a storage space, an extra bedroom or simply a relaxation area, garden sheds are a popular addition to homes. To ensure your shed combines functionality, style and comfort, certain factors – namely material, roofing, doors, windows and flooring – must be taken into account during installation.

To ensure your garden shed is waterproof and stable, it is advisable to start by preparing the ground. In order to do this, you have several options, including concrete slabs or wooden flooring. Your choice will depend on how durable you want the structure to be and the amount of insulation you require. While laying concrete slabs guarantees a solid foundation, it also requires some skill.

A great addition to any garden, a summerhouse can be considered a living space in its own right. With this in mind, doors, windows and roofing should all be given careful consideration. The most important factors are style, convenience and comfort.

If you want to give your garden shed a cabin-like feel, go for a pent roof made of light wood. This will provide a warm and rustic look. For a more modern look, a flat roof will be a great alternative. With regards to material, your roof covering should be chosen according to how exposed the structure will be:
- shingles are suitable for windy areas;
- asphalt panelsare completely waterproof;
- steel sheets are hard-wearing.

Before choosing your door and windows, think about how your shed will be used. If your garden shed will only be used for storage, there's no need to add windows. However, you might want to consider a double door for storing large items such as lawnmowers or ride-on mowers. If you plan on hosting guests, it's worth noting that double-glazed windows will provide more comfort. To save on space and for greater convenience, opt for a sliding door and/or windows.

In terms of structure material, many options are available to you:
- wood is the most popular choice: it gives garden sheds a rustic and cosy charm;
- PVC or resin offers both style and easy installation;
- metal is best for spaces used for storage.

For example, a wooden garden shed with a 28 mm flat roof, a 9 m² wooden floor installed over concrete slab and a double door will be perfect for hosting in your outdoor space. On the other hand, a 6.5 m² garden shed made of resin will be ideal for storing tools and adding value to your garden.
