Locksmithing is a complex expertise, it's not easy to discern which lock is ideal or just compatible with our furniture.
The first step in the choice is to define why you want to lock your furniture.
If the goal is to prevent a third party from accessing valuable goods or documents inside, then it's preferable to choose pin tumbler, lever, or wafer locks with a sliding bolt (a metal rectangle that lodges in the strike plate to block the opening).
On the other hand, if the goal is to prevent a child or someone else from accessing dangerous or fragile objects, for example, it is then preferable to install a cam lock (very common on mailboxes) or a sliding bolt lock with few wafers (the wafer lock is a mechanism very common on car locks).
The material, coating, and finish can be important depending on the visibility of your lock, for example, a lock with a brass finish will go well with dark oak or golden furniture. Similarly, it's advisable to avoid choosing locks with a too hard body when placing them on furniture made of softer material, as this will accelerate the degradation of the whole.
Once you have made your choice comes the moment you have to replace your old lock.
For amateurs, it's recommended to stick to installing surface-mounted locks. Just locate the holes, if there are any, or make them. Once that's done, all that's left is to place your lock and secure it with threading screws (metric preferably) and compatible diameter.
For flush, mortise, or recessed installations, you can either call a professional or arm yourself with patience and precision. Very precise measurements are necessary if you don't want to turn your furniture into a sieve. The main measurements are the faceplate, key axis, and the dimensions of the housing.
