Our basketry group grows willow in 600 square metre plots sufficient for 5,000 cuttings/stools. We use woven mulch to supress weed growth, pegging it down with plastic pegs, U shaped metal restraints and rocks. We have found that 8 inch plastic pegs do a better job in securing the woven mulch than 6 inch. Given the opportunity to either use 6 or 8 inch pegs I would always use the latter. If 6 inch pegs are solely used for restraining the mulch then the wind gradually loosens them and the mulch lifts. The willow cuttings are planted through small holes in the mulch. When the wind lifts the mulch it does not come down in the same place and the cuttings are buried and it is very difficult to uncover several hundred cuttings. Hence the use of rock. Gravity works on the rocks 24/7 and cuttings are secure.
