A litter box is essential to allow a cat to do its business. This device is especially crucial for cats raised in apartments. Mineral, plant-based, and clumping versions are available.
The mineral version has characteristics to be aware of:
- it comes in the form of clay pellets, gravel, or quartz;
- it is appreciated for its affordable price;
- it is comparable to a sponge, as it absorbs liquid;
- it prevents the development of bacteria;
- a little daily cleaning allows it to last for 3 weeks.
Silica is an option:
- it is often presented in the form of blue and white crystals packaged in small bags, hence its nickname of pearl or crystal litter;
- made of a mixture of zeolites, it is appreciated for its absorption power and its ability to mask bad odors;
- its lifespan is about one month if the pet owner takes care to remove feces daily or every 2 days;
- it must be replaced when the crystals turn yellow due to urine;
- some products incorporate a health indicator which is reflected by the change in color of the crystals (abnormal pH, presence of blood, etc.).
Plant-based references can substitute for traditional products:
- they are appreciated for their lightness;
- they are made from natural materials (straw, wood shavings, flax, corn cobs, recycled paper, etc.) that are biodegradable and recyclable (turned into compost);
- models based on wood fiber retain odors and absorb urine while limiting the proliferation of bacteria;
- some versions come in the form of sticks of wood pellets to be difficult for cats to carry;
- models based on oat hulls do not produce dust;
- they need to be replaced quite frequently;
- some products carry the NF Environment label.
Clumping versions are another alternative:
- as their name suggests, they do not absorb the liquid, but turn into solid clumps upon contact with urine to facilitate cleaning;
- this property is also found in both mineral litters and plant-based references as well as silica;
- they have the advantage of being less dusty and therefore less messy for the interior of the house or apartment;
- cleared of feces and clumped balls daily, they last a long time.
Other products are available:
- Colored models cater to the aesthetic concerns of owners. They offer an option to harmonize the decoration.
- Some models are scented to consider the olfactory sense of the owners.
Different fragrances like lavender, vanilla, honeysuckle, or orange are offered to mask bad smells. These products are often favored for cats raised in apartments.
Thus, cat owners have the choice between 100% ecological plant-based litters, more economical mineral versions, or silica known for its effectiveness against odors. As for the tray, the choice lies between simple (open) models and closed versions also called litter houses.
