In forward rotation, the phase of line A leads the phase of line B; When reversed, the phase of line B leads the phase of line A. The phase relationship and the number of rotations of AB can be determined using a simple digital logic circuit (exclusive OR gate and D flip-flop). By rotating the rotary encoder, the output pulse frequency can be counted in both the forward and reverse directions. Unlike a rotary potentiometer, this rotation is unlimited. The rotary encoder can be reset to its initial state, which starts counting from 0, using the knobs.
