Among the wide selection of padlocks our manufacturers offer, it’s not always easy to know which one is most suitable for a situation. There is always a risk of choosing a product that is either too secure or not secure enough.
The first step in choosing a padlock is to define the context in which it will be used.
For example, for use in a high-voltage area or a location containing flammable substances, it is strongly advised to choose the spark-resistant option. This will prevent any accidents due to friction between metal materials that could create sparks or even flames.
Next comes the type of goods or the value of the goods you wish to protect with the padlock.
For the first level of protection, padlocks are generally intended for uses such as protecting luggage, school lockers or any other protection of small to medium value objects. These are rectangular or bent padlocks with a pivoting shackle, and most often made of brass.
At the second level, you will find similar padlocks with wider and thicker bodies, some with double locking. The double-locking padlock is a system that locks each leg of the shackle in the body. Unlike pivot shackles – where only one leg is locked, the other pivots – double locking avoids breaking techniques thanks to the use of plates and shims.
For the third level, the highest level of security, you will encounter all the padlocks intended for the protection of motorized two-wheelers, hangars, and truck doors. You will find models that are anti-corrosion, anti-sawing, anti-break, anti-pick, these are generally the most developed models in the category, and some are shaped like disks. The disk shape allows for less shackle to be exposed outside the body, and therefore better resists pulling, breaking, and sawing.
And finally, for the most forgetful, choose the key-retaining feature that keeps the key in the padlock until it is locked again. This prevents losing it when you are not using your padlock.
