The barbecue grill is essential for preparing grilled food, stews, or braised potatoes. Available in stainless steel, cast iron, enameled cast iron, enameled steel or chrome-plated steel, the models suit both mobile barbecues and permanent structures.
Two types of barbecue grills can be distinguished based on their use.
- Traditional models are used for cooking skewers or cuts of meat. They come equipped with a handle for easy handling. Some built-in versions feature a crank.
- Special models are intended for specific foods. While some (fish-shaped) are specially designed for fish, others are made to facilitate the cooking of sausages, hamburgers, or meats. They consist of a double grill connected by a hinge and equipped with a handle that allows for easily flipping the food to cook both sides.
Cast iron grills have some specific characteristics to be aware of:
- they are hefty (relatively heavy), but last longer if properly maintained;
- they require about 15 minutes of heating time;
- they provide a uniform temperature across the entire surface;
- non-enameled models must be regularly oiled to protect against rust;
- enameled models do not rust.
Steel grills offer an alternative.
- Chrome-plated steel models are the most widespread. They are appreciated for their affordability.
- Enameled steel versions are protected against rust. However, the protective layer can crack over time on entry-level products.
- Stainless steel models are valued for their aesthetic appearance. Their lightness makes them easy to handle. Moreover, they heat up quickly and are easily cleaned with degreaser and black soap.
Other parameters should be considered when choosing this accessory.
- Its shape must be suited to that of the barbecue. Round, square, and rectangular models are available.
- Its dimensions should also be suited to the width or diameter of the barbecue. Standard sizes are offered, but specific models may be necessary. Opting for a model from the same brand as the barbecue helps to avoid mistakes.
Finally, various criteria should be considered in choosing a barbecue grill, including its shape and size, practicality, maintenance, and longevity.
