Add nitrogen by layering dead leaves (about 10 cm deep), then grass clippings (about 5 cm deep), kitchen scraps, and garden waste. Cover with about 60 cm of soil to reduce odors. 3. In dry weather, water the moist compost when adding a new layer. Also, dig a groove in the center of the compost to collect excess water. A shiny surface indicates that the compost is sufficiently moist. 4. To speed up decomposition, turn the compost and add a little water every two weeks. 5.
