When the cutting torch is lit, the acetylene valve must be opened first, then the oxygen valve, and the mouthpiece must not be pointed towards people. 3. When the torch is no longer in use, to extinguish the flame, the acetylene valve must be closed first, then the oxygen valve, to prevent the flame from smoldering and producing soot.
