High-power LEDs are generally used for spot lighting with a high luminous flux.

These LEDs come in a star-shaped form, which acts as a pre-dissipation plate. The center is the chip, covered by a small dome of transparent colored resin. The dome is attached to the plate by two tin pins. They are usually connected in series and, due to their metal base, must be mounted on a separate dissipating surface to prevent overheating.

To focus the light beam of these LEDs, lenses can be fitted.

High Power LEDs have four connectors, two positive and two negative, which can be connected by soldering with a solder tip.

Applications:

• Individual: Powering the LED directly from the power supply via a regulated source or with the use of resistors or regulators. Applying the desired voltage to the LED within its operating range.
• Parallel configuration: Powering a group of LEDs by connecting all anodes together and all cathodes together, using the required voltage regulated by a single series resistor.
• Series configuration: Powering a group of LEDs connected sequentially.

The number of LEDs that can be used in series will be limited by the voltage supplied by the power supply.

• Positioning: the positive terminal of the power supply must be connected to the anode (or the beginning of the series), while the negative terminal must be connected to the cathode (or the end of the series).
