The body of the trailer coupling fits into the notched lashing rail and the spring locks with which it is attached to the rail. Tension strap hooks can then be hooked onto the ring. It is also possible to thread the straps through the ring.
The clip slides easily into the rail within the notched channel. A very useful tool.
