2 productsHere is our offer of log sawhorses for cutting, sectioning, and splitting wood. We have a lot of varieties: major brands, different structures (varying number of "X"), with or without holding notches, adjustable or not. Some advice is given at the bottom of the page.
To create firewood from the large logs you have, there are several solutions. One of them is to simply saw them to the dimensions you want. For this, you need a saw and a support to keep the wood in position. A log sawhorse, a product you will find on this page in many references at a low price, is precisely ideal. But, among this extensive offer (many brands: WOLFCRAFT, GARDEN TECHNIC, EINHELL...), it can be difficult to choose for a novice. Here is a brief explanation of the differences that can exist between the models.
For starters, the sawhorse can have a varying number of "X", these parts serving as feet and support for the log (at the crossing). Of course, there can't just be one, but there can be 2 or 3. Three "X" will bring more stability to the structure as well as the possibility to saw within the structure safely, not just at the ends of the log.
Another important point: the presence of holding notches. The upper branches of the "X" may indeed be notched, to provide a perfect hold of the wood when you work. Indeed, in the absence of holding notches, the motion of the saw tends to rotate the log on itself. With these notches, there's no hesitation because it stays in place.
The third decisive element: it's about the capability of some sawhorses to adjust, by varying the opening angle of the "X". Thanks to this, the angle can be adjusted to the size of the log, to hold it well. This also allows for adjusting the working height to avoid having to stoop. Therefore, your back will suffer less from this work.
The last really important criterion: the length of the sawhorse. A significant length will allow you to place longer logs on it. If you have very long pieces of wood, prefer a reference that is also quite long.
Regarding the use of this kind of products, ManoMano recommends taking the utmost precautions. A saw or chainsaw are tools that can prove dangerous, so you must equip accordingly: protective gloves, protective shoes, thick pants, and protection glasses against splinters are essential.
