Wow! There is a multitude of mallets and sledges on ManoMano!
A mallet and a sledge refer to this ancient tool that’s a stone at the end of a stick. Fortunately, things have evolved a bit since then. The sledges and mallets we offer today on ManoMano are at the cutting edge of tooling technology, with well-known brands such as REVEX, MOB OUTILLAGE, STANLEY, and WIHA.
Two parts make up the sledges and mallets: the head, the handle, quite simply. But these two parts each have very specific characteristics that give certain qualities to each product.
The head of a sledge or mallet is more rigid than the head of mallets (which is generally made of wood or rubber). They are almost always made of steel.
The hardness of each steel is different, and the hardness of this steel will depend on the materials you can work with: the harder the steel, the bigger the materials (stone, metals) you can tackle.
The faces of the heads of sledges and mallets are generally flat for having a uniform striking force.
The angles of this steel parallelepiped also have their significance: a head with “chamfered” angles means that the edges of the head have been planed, blunted, to give more robustness to the tool. This prevents the sparking. There are also heads with sharp angles, meaning the edges are very pronounced. These heads are rather intended for demolishing materials.
The handle of a sledge or mallet can be made of wood, bi-material, tri-material, or even fiberglass. Three characteristics result from the quality of the handle: the grip, the vibrations felt by the user, and the tool's resistance.
Wood is the traditional material used. It provides a certain comfort of use, and it is quite resistant. We particularly recommend hickory wood, light and robust.
The bi-material technologies (that is to say composed of two plastics specifically adapted to the tool), tri-material (that is to say composed of three… well, you get it) or fiberglass offer excellent resistance and durability. In addition, these materials absorb vibrations much better.
A small bucolic aside:
The mallet also refers to a type of reed, named after its head which somewhat resembles a small medieval weapon mass. And why not take a closer look at our gardening category, now that we’re here? Nature is calling you.
After all these explanations about sledges and mallets, handles and heads, you might need a head-massage (ManoMano advises against massaging your head with a mallet, but as you wish, the customer is king at ManoMano).
