Knife, cutter, or scalpel?
These three products are intended for slightly different uses.
The knife will be practical for use requiring force, and therefore significant resistance, thanks to its fixed or retractable blade (generally of a significant width). The scalpel, on the other hand, is recommended for jobs where precise cutting is required but where the blade does not need to be particularly resistant.
Midway between the knife and the scalpel, we find the cutter. It is closer to the knife, but there can be models intended for general use (those equipped with 9 mm blades usually) and more versatile models that can even be used for heavy-duty tasks (28 mm and 25 mm blades). Moreover, the cutter is particularly suitable in situations where residues stick to the blade. The sharp edges allow for a clean and precise cut.
Regarding the blades, as you will have understood, the wider they are, the greater their strength.
The different options and parameters.
A knife can have a fixed blade or a retractable blade (or even self-retracting). The fixed blade, as its name suggests, will not move and therefore will be perfect for uses requiring force. The retractable blade knives and cutters will be almost similar in terms of performance but will allow the blade to be safely retracted into the handle when the use is finished.
Some knives and cutters (almost all from STANLEY) have a locking system via a slider or a wheel, allowing the blade to be locked for safety and convenience. Additionally, some STANLEY products are also equipped with the Interlock system which enhances the blade lock.
Another interesting option that will significantly ease the use of your cutter or knife is the blade reservoir, also called a blade magazine. It can generally hold between 3 and 10 blades, but this number can vary with the thickness of the blades. The change is then automatic, with no manual intervention required.
Sometimes you will find an integratedblade carrier, allowing you to guide the blade and increase its longevity, a blade cleaner to avoid obstructions, and a blade snapper to facilitate the breaking of snap-off blades.
The length of your knife or cutter is also an important parameter since the longer it is, the better the grip you'll have, or you can even hold it with two hands if the length exceeds 200 mm, thus performing heavy manipulations requiring significant force.
We also offer a fairly wide range of replacement blades for knives or cutters.
The parameters that vary concerning the blades are length, thickness, width, material, and the number of snap-off sections. You will choose them according to the tool you have, of course (the dimensions must match) but also according to your use: a thicker blade will be sturdier just as a special coating like Tungsten Carbide on STANLEY blades will increase the blade's resistance by 5 times!
