The flame welding torch is useful for various DIY tasks such as pipe joining. Single-gas or dual-gas, this equipment can be used to weld or cut metal parts.
The single-gas torch, also called a soldering lamp, is an essential DIY tool for plumbing work:
- it is composed of a pre-set regulator, a handle with a button to adjust the heating temperature, a hose, a propane or butane bottle, or a disposable gas cartridge;
- it is commonly used by plumbers for tinning, bending, or brazing pipes;
- the flame reaches a high temperature of 1,600 °C;
- disposable gas cartridges offer autonomy ranging from 1 h to 2 h.
The dual-gas torch is an alternative:
- the flame can reach 3,000 °C thanks to an oxygen bottle and an acetylene bottle;
- it can be used for small plumbing repairs and autogenous welding tasks;
- some models come with small nozzles suitable for use in jewelry making.
The choice of equipment depends on its future use.
- Model No. 00 can be equipped with a nozzle offering a flow rate of 10 L/h to 140 L/h. They are suitable for small welding and brazing tasks.
- Model No. 0 is the most used for flame welding and brazing. They can accommodate a nozzle offering a flow rate of 50 L/h to 200 L/h.
- Model No. 1 is equipped with a nozzle offering a flow rate of 250 L/h to 1,000 L/h. These are medium heaters.
- Model No. 2 is designed to receive nozzles offering a flow rate of 1,250 L/h to 5,000 L/h. They are suitable for industrial use.
The choice of nozzle also depends on the work to be done:
- a nozzle 40 allows welding of a thickness of 0.6 mm with a filler metal of 1 mm in diameter;
- a nozzle 100 allows welding of a thickness of 1 mm to 1.5 mm with a filler metal of 2 mm in diameter;
- a nozzle 250 allows welding up to 2 mm thickness with a filler metal of 3 mm;
- a nozzle 1,000 or 1,200 is indispensable for welding thicknesses of 7 to 10 mm with a filler metal of 5 mm.
Thus, the choice of torch depends mainly on the welding to be performed and the frequency of use of the equipment.
