Even with the ignition off! Before removing an old solenoid from a motorcycle, you can test it. By applying 12 volts to the two wires inside the plastic connector, the solenoid is polarity sensitive. Applying 12 volts with the wrong polarity won't damage the solenoid; it just won't work. When 12 volts are correctly applied to both wires: If the starter engages, the solenoid, battery, and starter are all good. If the solenoid makes an audible click but your starter doesn't engage, the solenoid is good.
