The thermal scarifier is used to clean the lawn using teeth, knives, or claws. It helps to remove grass clippings, lichens, or dead leaves. This engine-powered device thus promotes the good growth and health of the lawn by aerating the soil surface.
The thermal scarifier is very useful for maintaining the garden and green spaces. This device:
- looks deceptively like a lawn mower in terms of its design and ergonomics;
- is used to scarify the lawn, that is, to remove the layer of encumbering vegetation covering its entire surface (these debris suffocate the grass and prevent it from growing normally);
- is powered by a combustion engine (thermal), most often running on gasoline.
In general, this type of device is equipped with:
- four wheels;
- a handlebar;
- a thermal engine;
- a housing supporting and protecting the engine;
- a collection bag for collecting the cutting and scarification waste;
- rollers equipped with teeth, claws, or knives designed to eject grass clippings, moss, or dead grass towards the dedicated bag.
Due to its engine and energy source, the thermal scarifier:
- is especially recommended for treating areas larger than 500 m²;
- is quite noisy (the user must therefore wear hearing protection);
- requires regular maintenance (fuel, filter, spark plug, oil, winterizing, etc.).
It is essential to use this machine to keep your lawn healthy. Indeed, over the seasons, it tends to:
- be covered with roots, moss, dead leaves, grass clippings and various plant debris;
- suffocate under the effect of this layer of vegetation;
- suffer from the excessive acidity emanating from the soil caused by all these superfluous materials.
Even if the lawn is maintained regularly, it is strongly advised to proceed with the scarification of the outer surface:
- in autumn to eliminate grasses as well as dead leaves, and strengthen the soil before winter;
- after the first mowings of spring to clean the lawn and avoid an accumulation of waste in the garden.
The thermal scarifier is an indispensable tool for the maintenance of a lawn and should be used at least twice a year. It allows for the removal of vegetative layers that can harm the growth and health of the grass. The choice of the most suitable machine depends on its power, convenience, and the area to be maintained.
