Performance air filters are designed for use in modified engine systems to increase airflow, thus improving performance. The breather is typically equipped with baffles and filters to prevent oil mist and vapor from clogging the air filter. Vacuum from the intake manifold is applied to the crankcase via the PCV valve, drawing fresh air into the crankcase through the breather. The sole purpose of a breather filter is to allow clean air to be drawn through the engine block. Without velocity density adjustment (read: aftermarket ECU), you MUST allow the crankshaft to draw air past the MAF or AFM; otherwise, you are leaving unmetered air in your engine, which will make it run lean.
