A power strip allows multiple devices to be connected to a single electrical outlet. Its use avoids having to modify the home's electrical wiring by running cables or installing new outlets.
The available power strips differ in their installation system.
- The portable models are the most common. They have the advantage of being removable. You simply plug one into a wall outlet to connect several devices at the same time.
- The fixed models allow the user to have multiple outlets from a single power source. They are installed in place of the wall outlets.
Different equipment is available to suit all needs.
- The duplex, triplex, or quadruplex models allow for two, three, or four outlets from a single source.
- Extension cords physically move the source. They also offer the possibility of connecting multiple electrical devices. This type of equipment is recommended if the source is far from the location of the devices.
- Some extension cords are equipped with a switch. The user can thus establish or interrupt the electricity supply at will.
- The retractable versions can be hidden under their support when not in use.
Some power strips are equipped with safety devices to protect electrical devices.
- Power strips with surge protectors safeguard electrical devices from atmospheric phenomena. A state indicator allows the user to check whether their equipment is working or not. Indeed, a device that has been struck by lightning is out of order.
- Power strips with surge protectors optimize the protection of electrical devices against overvoltage. They can be fixed, portable, with or without an extension cord.
The choice of a power strip therefore depends on the user's needs. However, the presence of NF or CE marking, as well as compliance of the device with the NF C 15-100 standard relating to electrical installations should be verified.
