Too many drafts? Your children never close the garage door? Why not simply install an automatic door closer to improve your thermal and sound insulation? Choose a door closer with a sliding arm to ensure the system's discreetness. This door closer should preferably be adjustable in speed for a smooth and quiet closing.
There are three main families of door closer systems.
- There are door closers with sliding arms, the advantage they provide is that this type of device is discreet. The arm folds under its rail in the closed position. It is also a more vandal-resistant system compared to a standard arm. There are also recessed sliding arm systems.
- Door closers with standard arms: they are cheap and affordable. They have, like sliding arm door closers, all the possible characteristics concerning this type of product. They are also more visible than a sliding arm.
- Finally, spring door closers. They are particularly simple to use and inexpensive compared to hydraulic systems with arms. However, they do not comply with EN NF 1154 standards for the door to be declared fire-resistant. There are different models of door closers, one with a rod and the other with a spring closer to the raw state.
The spring with the rod will exert pressure on the door to ensure its closing. A rod support is placed on the flat of the door where the rod slides to push the door. This system is adjustable.
There is also a simple spring system, it mounts diagonally along the frame, hinge side. When the door opens, the spring stretches and then needs to retract, causing the door to close.
Next comes the explanation of the closing force.
This force is an indicator based on the size and weight of the doors that the system can support. It is defined by a summary table here:
Force 2: Doors up to 850 mm wide and up to 40 Kg
Force 3: Doors up to 950 mm wide and up to 60 Kg
Force 4: Doors up to 1100 mm wide and up to 80 Kg
Force 5: Doors up to 1250 mm wide and up to 100 Kg
Force 6: Doors up to 1400 mm wide and up to 120 Kg
Force 7: Doors up to 1600 mm wide and up to 160 Kg
The force is adjustable on many products.
In relation to the fire-resistance standard, it is crucial to know that if you install a stop option on your door closer system, your installation will no longer comply with the NF EN 1154 standard. An exception exists if this stop is connected to the mains and deactivates when a power cut occurs. This type of stop is called an electromagnetic or magnetic stop.
Another adjustable feature for this type of product is the speed. It is generally adjustable on two different sections of the door opening. For example, you can adjust the closing speed from 150° to 20°, and then for a calm and smooth closing, without noise, you can adjust the remaining 20° of closing.
To install your door closer, you may need a mounting support or mounting plate. Fix it wherever you want using a drilling template that shows you where to drill your holes. You can place the body of the door closer on the frame and the arm on the door, or vice versa.
These door closers are not very aesthetic but can be very useful for garage doors, storage rooms, or sheds. This type of system is also very commonly used in professional settings to equip offices to fire-resistance standards.
