Parasols: make the right choice
When it comes time to choose an umbrella, it is crucial to consider certain criteria in order to make the right choice. Here are the main elements to consider for selecting the umbrella that best fits your needs and your space.
Type of umbrella
The first criterion to consider is the type of umbrella. You have a choice among three main types: straight, tiltable, and cantilever.
- The straight umbrella is a classic with a round, square, or rectangular canopy fixed on a straight pole.
- The tiltable umbrella has a movable pole that allows adjusting the canopy angle according to the movement of the sun.
- The cantilever umbrella is positioned on the side rather than at the center of the table, thus offering a wide coverage and great flexibility.
Shape and canopy
The shape of the umbrella can be round, rectangular, square, or even octagonal. It is important to note that the rectangular shape provides a better shading area.
As for the canopy, its quality depends on the weight (between 200 and 300 g/m²) and the UPF protection index against UV rays. A canopy with a higher weight and a higher UPF index will offer better protection. Regarding the material of the canopy, acrylic is considered the best option due to its durability and resistance to stains and wear. Polyester is more affordable, but its colors may fade over time.
Pole and opening system
The umbrella pole can be made of wood, aluminum, or steel.
- The wooden pole is more eco-friendly but requires yearly treatment to protect it.
- The aluminum pole is durable and rustproof.
- The steel pole is cheaper but plastic coated.
Regarding the opening system, it's not about left or right direction; the system is fixed on the pole. You have a choice between:
- The push button, similar to opening an umbrella.
- The crank, more suitable for people with reduced mobility.
- The pulley, allowing height adjustment.
