A rasp is a small tool with a surface covered in fine teeth, more or less spaced and more or less sharp. It is used to shape soft materials like wood, plastic but also some metals such as tin, lead, aluminum... Rasps should not be confused with files, which are mainly used on metals and are striated, not pricked unlike rasps.
How to choose your rasp?
A rasp is chosen based on your use. Considering this, there are two parameters you need to know: the shape and the cut of the rasp
As for the shape, also called the profile of the rasp, there are three main ones, all intended for different uses:
Flat: a rasp with this shape will be used on flat surfaces or surfaces you wish to level.
Half-round: neither flat nor totally round, this type of profile is suitable both for smoothing out relief parts and for rounding off cuts.
Round: also called a "rat-tail" rasp, it allows for correcting notches or cuts whether they are rounded or not.

The coarser a cut is, the wider and fewer the teeth are, and conversely, a fine cut will have many very small teeth.
In terms of use, this translates as follows:

Medium cut: for all common works, choose this type of cut
