Whether for DIY or professional use, the right tools must be used to screw and unscrew screws, bolts, and nuts. Nothing beats the ratchet socket set to have a range of keys available for various uses.
The socket ratchet is a complementary tool to a set of keys that includes flat, mixed, and pipe keys. It is comprised of a handle ending in a ratchet mechanism with 24 to 80 teeth. At its end, an output square accommodates interchangeable sockets. A lever or wheel allows reversing the tightening direction.
This ratchet mechanism allows to tighten or loosen bolts by making back-and-forth movements without removing the key. It is therefore practical for frequent tightening and loosening of bolts and nuts of different sizes as it is more manageable and faster than a classic flat or pipe wrench, especially in a confined space. The socket key can also accommodate screwdriver bits and thus be used to quickly screw and unscrew different types of screws.
Different types of socket wrench sets are available, the most common being the composite handle key. DIYers can also choose the double ratchet, the hammer ratchet, the articulated head ratchet, the extra-fine teeth ratchet, or the handleless ratchet. In general, the ratchet wrench is made of robust stainless steel that has undergone a thermal treatment: chrome vanadium.
The interchangeable sockets with other accessories like the extension, the bit holder, the universal joint, as well as the reducer and/or the increaser complete the ratchet socket set.
The dimension of the output square is also a criterion to consider, as it is offered in different sizes:
- radio for a size of ¼ inch;
- junior for an output square of 3/8 inch;
- standard for ½ inch;
- truck for ¾ inch;
- mammoth for an output square of 1 inch.
The ratchet also varies according to the number of teeth. The more teeth there are, the more the ratchet socket set allows working in a confined space. This type of tool is ideal for hard-to-reach nuts.
