How to choose your protective mask?
As with all optical protection, it’s necessary to be well versed in the different standards and codifications.
To know which codification you should choose for your mask, you need to understand what you will be using your future equipment for.
Therefore, you should ask yourself the following questions:
Will I be exposed to projectile impacts? If so, at what speed and size? Will I need to protect against liquids? Against molten metals and hot solids? Or even gases?…
First of all, regarding impacts, we're talking about mechanical risks. Here’s the most frequently used codification for masks:
F: low energy particle shocks (about 45 meters per second)
B: medium energy particle shocks (about 120 meters per second)
A: high energy particle shocks (about 190 meters per second)
T: means that the protector withstands impacts at extreme temperatures ranging from -5°C to 55°C
These three letters can be combined to combine senses.
Another regulatory element to be aware of is the field of use. There are several, symbolized by numbers:
3: protection against liquids
4: protection against large dust particles
5: protection against gases and fine dust
8: protection against electrical arcs
9: resistance to molten metals and hot solids
Note that masks can cover several fields of use
We also find the standards EN 170 and EN 179, meaning respectively that the equipment is equipped with a filter against ultraviolet rays for the first and a filter for welding for the second.
Treatments can also be applied to the screens of goggle glasses, just like for glasses: anti-scratch treatment (symbolized by the letter K) and anti-fog treatment (letter N) for the most common.
Regarding brands, they vary. The world reference in terms of optical protection being BOLLE SAFETY. However, maybe you need more modest protection for occasional tasks? We can also offer that, at unbeatable prices.
There, now that you know everything about goggle glasses, all that’s left is to browse through ManoMano’s pages in search of the protection best suited to your DIY tasks! And if you still have questions, our tool expert is here to answer them!
