AA, AAA and other standard batteries: make the right choice

Invented in 1800 by the Italian scientist Alessandro Volta, the electric battery has become ubiquitous in all everyday objects. But while no one imagines living without batteries, their naming remains relatively obscure, and it's not always easy to navigate among all the technical terms in a large store.
That's where ManoMano comes in to shed light on your lantern (and make some great puns)!
1) The types of batteries.
First, we must distinguish three types of batteries: the saline battery, the alkaline battery and the lithium battery. Saline batteries are becoming less common, being replaced by alkaline batteries in modern devices. The latter offer a better quality/price ratio because they last much longer than their saline colleagues.
They are compatible because they have the same voltage per "cell", which is the basic unit for batteries. For example, a 1.5 volt battery has one cell. You can make a 4.5 volts battery by assembling three cells, the battery is then wider.
Lithium batteries stand out for their extremely long lifespan. They are often used in alarm and fire detection systems, which require low power but very long autonomy.
2) The formats of batteries.
Let's start with the 1.5 volt batteries, which are the most common. There are different names depending on the size of the battery: AAAA (LR61), AAA (LR3), AA (LR6), N (LR1), C (LR14) and D (LR20). Among these batteries, you surely know the AAA and AA ones, which are found in remote controls, toys, calculators, portable music players, alarm clocks, etc…
The LR14 and LR20 batteries are common in larger devices: lanterns, headlights, large toys, and radios.
There is also the 3LR12 or 3R12 battery, at 4.5 volts. It is notably used in some flat torches.
There are also 6, 9, and 12 volt batteries for very specific uses.
The 6 volt LR820 batteries are commonly called construction batteries because they are used in the headlights on construction sites. They are also found in portable spotlights.
The most common 9 volt batteries are the 6LR61 batteries, which you will find in some radios but especially smoke detectors. Microphones sometimes also use this type of battery, for your rocking parties!
Finally, there are two formats of 12 volt batteries: the 23A and the 27A batteries. Both are essential in home automation, for the super-remote controls that adjust heating, lighting, shutters, and soon the toilet flush!
