Above ground pools: make the right choice
Above ground pools can provide all the joys of swimming without the need to carry out any major construction work. Here you'll find all our rigid above ground pools and tips to help you choose the best model for you.
Above ground pools can be inflatable or feature a steel, timber or stone surround. Your choice will ultimately depend on the amount of sunshine where you live and how often you plan to use the pool.
In order to find the right size of above ground pool, think carefully about its location. It is advisable to install the pool in a sunny, wind-free spot and, if possible, far from any trees to protect the water from falling leaves or insects.
No matter which model you go for, above ground pools must be placed on a perfectly flat and stable base, and the best option is to pour a concrete slab.
Above ground pools: which material is best?
Timber frame above ground pools offer a natural look. These models are very attractive and blend perfectly into garden landscapes. They can be combined with a wooden deck or set up on grass, just as long as you have carefully planned out the space before installation.
Above ground timber frame pools are usually delivered in kits designed to make installation quick and easy – most can be set up in less than a day!
However, this type of pool requires regular maintenance as the wood is exposed to the elements, UV rays and moisture. The pool surround should be cleaned on a regular basis. Some types of wood may also have to be given a waterproofing treatment to deal with weather changes.
Steel walled above ground pools offer a very long service life. In fact, these models are probably the most hardwearing of all. Installation tends to be easy as these pools often come in handy kits which don't require a great deal of DIY know-how to figure out: the liner is set up, the pool wall goes over the top and a metal surround is added to give your above ground pool its round, oval or rectangular shape.
Picking your pool safety equipment
Remember – accidents do happen! Above all else, ensure your pool is fitted with adequate safety features. With this in mind, it is recommended that you fit at least one of the following pieces of pool safety equipment: a pool enclosure, an alarm, a pool fence or a pool cover. Furthermore, remember to remove the pool ladder whenever young children are playing around the pool.
Above ground pool pumps to keep your water clean
Above ground pool pumps are generally quite basic systems. However, before installing the pool it is important to think about how you are going to power the pump. Some pools come in kits with pumps supplied. On days when the pool is in use, the pump and filtration system will have to run for several hours a day.
