Planning on taking your cat out on the road? You'll need some equipment! A harness will be the more comfortable option for your feline friend while a collar is still recommended for ID purposes. Not sure whether to go for a fixed or extendible lead? Read on to find the right collar, lead and harness for your cat.

Cat accessories for everyday use

It's not always easy to find the right accessories for your cat. Looking for a stylish collar to attach an ID tag to? Want your pet to get out and about without the risk of them going missing? In addition to the usual cat feeding and grooming accessories, you might want to invest in a collar, lead or harness for your pet.

Leads are used to keep your cat safe while out on walks. But you'll need to find the most comfortable length for both of you. From extendable lead to short leads, your decision will usually come down to preference. A good harness should conform to the contours of your cat's body and allow them to move about naturally. It must also feature a secure fastening. Finally, cat collars must feature a quick-release fastening to stop it from getting caught on trees and other objects. But when it comes to style, there's really something for everyone out there!

Cat leads

Want your cat to enjoy a bit of fresh air? If you want to take your cat outdoors but are scared of them running away, a lead can be a great option. There are two basic types of lead:

  • Leads with a fixed length.

  • Extendable leads (usually 3 to 5 metres).

When used in a secure location, a long lead will allow your cat some freedom without them having to walk right at your heels. They can relax and enjoy nature safely just a few metres from you. Alternatively, you can secure the lead in the garden as long as you keep an eye on your cat while they sniff around. But beware: some extendible leads can jolt if your cat suddenly darts off – be sure to keep a tight hold of the lead!

Cat ID tags

ID tags are engraved with your details to show where your cat lives. If your cat strays too far from the home or gets into trouble, an ID tag will allow strangers to get in touch with you.

These tags come in all shapes (round, cat shape, hearts, etc.) and sizes to match your pet.

You can usually get your ID tags engraved online, or else you can make a visit to a locksmiths. - Alternatively, you attach an ID tube to your cat's collar. These metal tubes are hollow so you can insert your details on a piece of paper. This can be a really practical if you are going on holiday and don't want to pay for new tags.

Cat collars and harnesses

Collars are used to attach ID tags and give your furry friend a stylish edge! They come in all types of materials including leather, plastic and fabric; be sure to choose the right material for your cat's coat type. If your cat ventures outdoors by itself, you will have to buy a quick release collar to ensure it doesn't get caught on anything.

Harnesses are used to keep your cat safe on walks. They may clip into place or be made up of an adjustable strap system. Be sure to check the fastenings before use and on a regular basis.

To ensure your cat's comfort you should be able to slide a finger beneath the straps comfortably.

Of course, you'll have to check that your cat isn't able to slip out of the harness! Quick tip: Y-shaped harnesses are usually best for security.

With a handyman-father, I grew up with the soft sound of the sander and hammer on weekends. I am both manual and cerebral, I learned the basics of DIY and the customisation of furniture because I was passionate. The salvage mentality is a true way of life that allowed me to know how to use all the tools and products needed to give something a second life, from a sander to varnish. I have two favourite activities: the transformation of old furniture and decoration tips. I am always ready to lend a helping hand to revamp a table or to restore a mirror that was intended for the tip that will become a friend’s centrepiece. I’m convinced that it’s possible to reinvent an interior by small, regular modifications and I constantly research low-cost ideas.
