How to choose the right dog kennel
Most dogs love to have their own enclosed space to use all year long. Dog kennels can be set up in the garden, on a deck or on a balcony. Even if your dog lives indoors, they are sure to enjoy having their own outdoor space whether they use it to hide away from the cold or take shade on a hot day.
It's a good idea to introduce your dog to the kennel at a young age and it is essential to make it a comfortable and enjoyable space to shelter in. Dog kennels should always be placed in a shaded spot in summer and in a sunny spot in winter. To ensure your dog feels perfectly at home in their kennel, you'll need to ensure that all their needs are met. Start by picking a kennel that is the right size for your pet – don't choose a model that is too big or too small or your dog will simply never use the kennel!
Kennels are generally made of wood or plastic and your choice of material will depend on your budget, insulation requirements and the style you're after. It is even possible to find kennels with fabric interiors. In terms of flat vs. sloped roofs, it all comes down to the weather: sloped roofs are best for areas with a lot of rainfall. Next, you'll have to think about whether or not you want to provide little extras such as a door for better insulation or even a little deck for al fresco naps!
Don't forget to invest in your pet's comfort with a mattress or cover for the ground to insulate the kennel whether it's warm or chilly outdoors. You might also decide to feed your dog in the kennel, in which case you'll need a dog bowl or even an automatic food dispenser!
Kennels
What size of dog kennel do I need?
It's important to pick the right kennel for your dog's body type. Your dog needs to be able to enter the kennel easily, lie down comfortably and be able to turn around. On the other hand, don't be tempted to go too big – a kennel should be just big enough to ensure that it can be heated from the warmth of your dog's body.
Dog kennel sizes
You will usually be able to choose from about five different sizes of kennels to match all breeds. Of course, kennels will all vary in size depending on the manufacturer.
XS for small dogs like Bichon Frises, Pekingese or dachshunds.
S for medium-sized dogs like French bulldogs or pugs.
M for medium to large dogs like labradors or huskies.
L for large breeds like red setters, greyhounds and giant poodles.
XL for extra large breeds like Bernese Mountain Dogs or Great Danes.
A dog kennel must measure at least double the length of your dog. It shouldn't really be any taller than about one and a half times your dog's height while standing.
Dog kennel materials
Dog kennels are basically made in one of two materials: wood or plastic. Alternatively, you might want to go for a fabric kennel that can be used indoors.
Wooden dog kennels
Wood is the most traditional option for a dog kennel. Attractive and durable, wooden dog cabins are weather-resistant and offer good insulation.
It's worth noting that wood will need to be treated every five years or so. This means sanding down the surface before applying a stain or varnish designed for outdoor use. Heavier than a plastic kennel, a wooden kennel will be trickier to move around. It will also be more expensive.
Wood is generally considered the most suitable material for a kennel as it is insulating, hard-wearing and attractive.
Plastic dog kennels
A very affordable option, plastic dog kennels are lightweight and easy to move from one spot to another, depending on the season.
Available in a range of different colours and shapes, these kennels are easy to clean and won't cling on to odours as much as wooden models. However, plastic kennels are less durable than wooden ones. Plastic is also less insulating than wood.
Fabric dog kennels
A fabric dog kennel shouldn't be confused with a pet carrier. Equipped with a large opening at the front, these little dog houses offer your dog a cosy spot to rest indoors.
While very lightweight and usually quite compact, fabric dog kennels must not be used outdoors unless the weather is particularly clear.
It's important to check that the kennel can be cleaned easily.

Dog kennel roof designs
When it comes to picking a roof design for your dog kennel, you will basically have to choose between a flat or sloped roof; each option has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Sloped dog kennel roofs
If you live in an area with a lot of rain or snow fall, go for a dog kennel with a sloped roof to allow the water to run off easily.
These roofs can, however, be harder to clean.
Flat dog kennel roofs
Even if the roof is slightly sloped, these roofs will offer less effective water drainage than fully sloped roofs. Flat roofs are easier to clean and all the more so as they can usually be removed.
Another benefit: your dog can climb up on the roof for a sunny observation post!
Some kennels are equipped with a removable roof for easy maintenance.
Dog kennel doors, curtains and decks
Kennel doors and curtains
While most kennels have a wide open door, some come fitted with doors or plastic curtains used to provide extra insulation from the cold and rain.
A curtain can be a great addition to kennels over the colder months.
Kennel decks
A kennel with a little deck area provides your canine friend with an extra space of their own. Often topped with a roof, these areas can be used for sheltered outdoor naps.
Any dog house designed for outdoor use must be fitted with legs to lift the structure off the ground; this will provide insulation from the ground and keep your kennel dry.

After 8 years of trade, I turned professional: I trained myself to be a painter and carpet fitter, either on my own or with 16 year old comrades. 9 months later, following vocational training, I created my company. I’m a self-taught DIYer and decoration enthusiast, I love to find and restore furniture and to create unique decoration pieces. I completed the renovation of my sister’s house with my niece: electrics, tiling, plasterboard...we did it all. And today, if I can share my experience I'm happy to do it. Good Luck.
