Different types of tap spout
Swan neck tap spout
This type of tap spout is long and arches elegantly over the sink. The swan neck spout is the most common type of tap spout and is also very practical.
Cast tap spout
This tap spout has a basic design and forms a single piece with the tap body at a 45° angle.
Curved C-tap spout
This spout type is similar to a swan neck, but slightly curved. Very common in classic kitchens.
Pull down tap spout
This type of tap spout stands out for its ability to tilt vertically and horizontally over the sink. Common on high-end tap sets.
U-spout
Very practical in all kitchens, the universal U-shaped spout or U-spout optimises the space above the sink and reduces the space between the bowl and the spout. These are often square in modern kitchens and round in classic kitchens.
Straight tap spout
This tap spout is effectively an elongated S-shape. It's shorter than the other types of spout though, hence the name. Great for bathroom sinks and wash basins.
Swivel spout
Great for double bowl sinks or utility sinks, a swivel spout can pivot at an angle of between 150° and 360°. Also common on high-end taps.
Countertop basins
Features and accessories
To choose the right tap spout, there are a few important factors to consider.
Spout height
In your kitchen, the priority is having the space for tasks like washing up, so you'll want plenty of height in your tap spout, such as the swan neck spout. This gives you freedom of movement without getting in the way of other sink accessories - making washing and rinsing much easier.
Sink or basin depth
Whether it's for your bathroom or kitchen taps, make sure you choose a tap spout suited to the depth of your sink for ease of use.
Tap spout screw thread
Before buying, make sure the screw thread of your spout is compatible with your tap body so the two can be connected. Standard sizes are:
15 x 21mm / 1/2’’
20 x 27mm / 3/4’’
Tap spout material
Tap spouts are generally made of steel with some type of surface treatment, such as:
polished or satin chrome
gloss chrome
polished or satin brass
brushed stainless steel, etc.
Some models have a plastic coating available in a range of retro colours: light brown, off-white, etc.
Tap spout accessories
To ensure watertightness, all spout types are connected to the tap body with a washer sized according to the screw thread. At one end of the spout there's an aerator which allows you to adjust the flow rate.
Additional tap aerators can be installed at the base of the spout for improved control over the jet and flow rate. You can also add a sprayer to your tap setup, which can be convenient for kitchens.
