Choosing a car trailer is not a random decision but depends on the user’s needs. In addition to insurance, some car trailer accessories are also necessary for smooth driving on public roads and safely transporting equipment.
For DIY tasks, gardening, or transporting equipment from one place to another, a car trailer proves to be practical by taking on equipment or materials that are too heavy or bulky. Some car trailer accessories are specific and others are standard across all brands:
- an electrical wiring harness (standard);
- a male plug and a female connector socket (standard);
- a spare wheel (specific);
- a jockey wheel (standard);
- a lock (standard);
- a tow hitch (standard);
- a cover (specific, dimensions according to the trailer).
Electrical wiring harnesses, male and female plugs are essential for connecting the trailer lights, which must replicate the same signals as the towing vehicle. The main function of the jockey wheel is to stabilize the trailer when stationary and to facilitate manual maneuvers.
Other car trailer accessories are also useful, such as loading ramps, straps, wheel chocks, or even a winch. Indeed, a loading ramp facilitates the loading and unloading of:
- motorcycles;
- bicycles;
- ride-on mowers;
- etc.
A winch may also be necessary for loading these heavy items and reducing physical effort. For a van trailer, a twin-axle trailer, or a versatile model with a GVWR of more than 500 kg, it is advisable to opt for loading ramps and a winch depending on the items transported. In general, trailer accessories are equipment that improves usage conditions. They secure the user’s work and contribute to reducing – in most cases – physical efforts.
