Do you want to install a drip irrigation system in your vegetable garden but are lost among all the different products required? Don’t worry, the gardening specialists at ManoMano are here to explain the role of each piece.
Drip irrigation is both an economical and easy-to-install method for watering your garden. The principle is simple, you will provide directly at the foot of the plant the exact amount of water it needs. This minimizes water expenditure and avoids watering the weeds around it at the same time. ManoMano's gardening experts recommend this type of watering for hedges, vegetable gardens, or any other linear planting.
A drip irrigation system is designed to operate at low pressure, which is why you cannot use "normal" hoses and fittings. Capillary tubes and capillary fittings are suitable for this type of irrigation because they have a particularly small internal diameter – about 5 mm – which helps to reduce water pressure. Two other types of pieces will attach to your capillary tubes. They too must be designed to operate at low pressure: the drip valves and the capillary extensions. Valves are installed like a capillary fitting and allow you to stop the water flow to part of the network if you do not wish to water all your plants. The extensions are useful for reaching plants that are a bit off the main line of the tube.
Installing the drippers on the capillary tube is quite simple, you just need to pierce the tube using a tube puncher. This tool allows you to make a clean hole that's the right size for the dripper. Our gardening team advises against trying to make the holes any other way than with this tool, as it risks damaging the tube. If you later wish to move the drippers, no problem! On this page, you will find cap fittings that will take the place of the dripper to fill the hole it left in the tube.
The placement of your capillary tubes is not chosen at random, they must follow the planting lines and stay in place. Otherwise, the drippers could be misaligned, and the water would not reach the foot of the plant. That’s why we offer support for capillary tube, hose clamps as well as anchoring stakes that allow you to firmly attach your tubes to the ground.
Finally, if you do not want to bother with selecting items, we offer drip kits that include both drippers, fittings, and the necessary accessories.
