The Principle

The expansion tank is widely used in central heating systems to compensate for the expansion of water circulating in your pipes. Indeed, when water is heated in a closed pipe system, it tends to expand and thus increase the pressure. That's why the expansion tank is recommended, as it will allow you to maintain a stable pressure and thus prevent overpressure accidents.

Additionally, when your system cools down, the expansion tank replenishes your circuits with water to avoid any areas of the path from running out of water.

Generally, the expansion tank is equipped with a membrane that can be made of different types of elastomers (NBR, EPDM, SBR) or Butyl. Its role is to separate two elements: the water in your circuit and the flammable gas contained in the tank.

As for the color, most of the time red is used for heating expansion tanks and white for sanitary expansion tanks.

Deflated expansion tank?

If this situation occurs, you will need to address it quickly. The reason for this phenomenon can be the porosity of the membrane that separates the water and gas.

To restore the pressure inside your expansion tank, you can use a pump with a pressure gauge. You will first need to stop your boiler and drain the water contained in your pipes until reaching zero pressure (0 bar).

Then you will have to find the filling valve of your tank – which may look like a car valve - and start to inflate through the orifice as if you were inflating a car tire.

To know the pressure at which you should fill your expansion tank, it is best to look at the manufacturer's label, usually placed on the tank itself.
