The Principle
The expansion tank is widely used in central heating systems to compensate for the expansion of water circulating in your pipes. Indeed, when water is heated in a closed pipe system, it tends to expand and thus increase the pressure. That's why the expansion tank is recommended, as it will allow you to maintain a stable pressure and thus prevent overpressure accidents.
Additionally, when your system cools down, the expansion tank replenishes your circuits with water to avoid any areas of the path from running out of water.
Generally, the expansion tank is equipped with a membrane that can be made of different types of elastomers (NBR, EPDM, SBR) or Butyl. Its role is to separate two elements: the water in your circuit and the flammable gas contained in the tank.
