External door handles: make the right choice

So, how do you choose your door handle?

To avoid mistakes, first, consider the door you have and the installation you want to replace.

You will then need to take some measurements.

For sets on backplates, measure the mounting hole spacing and lock spacing.

- Mounting hole spacing: This is the distance between the mounting screws on the backplate (top/bottom). It is generally 195 or 165 mm.

- Lock spacing: This is the distance between the center of the cylinder and the center of the square spindle, usually 70 mm.

With these measurements in hand, you can then start looking for the design that pleases you.

There are special models for "apartment doors". These models are equipped with through fixings that provide better adhesion to the door and reinforce the assembly against vandalism or tearing.

Handles with pull designs are also often reinforced or armored. With an underplate and an additional cylinder protection, breaking into these doors becomes even more difficult.

You can also choose between a handle on a backplate or rosette. This only affects the design. To increase the security of a rosette installation, it is possible to buy handles on rosettes alone and purchase an armored rosette to attach to the door to protect the key entry.

If your door is of the traditional type, made of wood, opt for iron door handles, which would add extra charm to your door. You can also complement this installation with a door knocker.

For more modern style doors, brass or aluminum handles in silver, white, champagne, brushed stainless steel, or black finishes will do nicely.
