Everything you need to know about mattresses
Paired with the bed and matched with the right box spring, a good mattress is essential for deep, restorative sleep. Whether the mattress offers firm comfort or soft comfort, before thinking about delivery, you will have to choose:
- The brand: Simmons mattresses, Bultex mattresses, Emma mattresses, Dunlopillo mattresses...
- The suspension: foam mattresses (polyether, polyurethane, memory foam), latex mattresses (natural or synthetic), innerspring mattresses (biconical springs, continuous coils, pocketed coils), each suspension has its own comfort feel.
- The density: firm or soft comfort, comfort zones, density is measured in kg/m3 (from 20 to 100 kg/m3 across all suspensions), it is proportional to the sleeper's weight and directly related to the comfort feel.
- The size: from queen size or king size mattresses to more traditional dimensions, the size of the mattress is closely linked to the sleeper(s).
- The box spring: the mattress is also chosen according to the box spring, for example, a box spring base is recommended with a spring mattress and not a slatted base.
Whether they are made in France, in Europe, or elsewhere, regardless of the manufacturer (Emma, Simmons, ...), mattresses are subject to strict standards (Ecarf, European Ecolabel, Eurolatex Eco Standard, etc.).
Also, it is advisable to check customer reviews and comments about the quality of the mattress, its suspension, the ticking (cotton fabric), its welcoming feel, the comfort sensation, etc.
Finally, note that free delivery is increasingly common, whether you live in Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, or anywhere in France.
Do you want to know more about how to choose your mattress? We'll go into a bit more detail below:
There are numerous mattress models and brands (Simmons, Dunlopillo, Bultex, Emma mattresses...). In this plethora of options, start by choosing a type of mattress based on its use.
- The mattress for a traditional box spring is the one with the widest choice, whether in terms of size, technology, or design.
- The Japanese mattress, or futon, is made up of several layers of carded cotton and traditionally goes with a tatami. This type of mattress has a very special design that will surprise you with its simple, natural, and sleek appearance.
- The waterbed, particularly relaxing, and must be paired with a specific box spring with a particular design, protecting the mattress from any risk of damage.
- The mattress for a sofa bed, BZ, or klik-klak will be chosen based on the type of use, whether occasional or daily. However, ensure that this mattress can offer you adequate comfort according to your frequency of use.
- The guest mattress can be foldable. It can also be an inflatable or self-inflating mattress, from the brand Intex for example, with the self-inflating mattress being thinner than the inflatable mattress but appreciated for its automatic inflation.
- Also pay special attention to the design and thickness of your mattress: the comfort and thickness of your mattress are not automatically linked. It depends on your body type.
Foam, spring, or latex mattress, which to choose?
There are three main types of suspension, which make up the core of the mattress:
1. The foam mattress
2. The latex mattress
3. The innerspring mattress
The foam mattress can be of polyether foam, a less expensive synthetic cellular foam but more suited for guest bedding. There is also polyurethane foam mattress, this foam offers better elasticity and the density is higher. The different types of foam impact the level of firmness and the comfort sensation of your mattress. An inappropriate choice of foam mattress for your body type can affect the quality of your sleep.
And finally, the high-end foam technology is the memory foam, a very high-density polyurethane foam that reacts to body heat to mold to its contours, before returning to its original shape after each movement. This type of foam mattress is based on a careful and quality design ensuring better comfort and a better sleep.
The latex mattress, whether natural or synthetic, is highly elastic. This mattress offers excellent support and possibly several comfort zones.
Innerspring mattresses
There are three types of innerspring mattresses:
1. Biconical spring mattresses provide good support, but they tend to be noisy and age poorly.
2. Continuous coil mattresses, made of a single steel wire looped into a spiral, offer better support and greater durability.
3. Pocketed coil mattresses, where each spring is encased in its own individual pocket, providing much better sleeping independence and good lifespan.
Whether the innerspring mattress is biconical, continuous coil or pocketed coil, and regardless of its brand (Simmons, Emma...), it is advisable to pair it with a box spring base for better comfort.
What mattress size to choose?
It all depends on the age, size, and body type of its user, whether it's a baby, a child, or an adult. Choosing the right dimensions for your mattress is essential for the sleeper's comfort.
- For a baby bed: a mattress of 60 x 120 cm or 70 x 140 cm.
- For a single bed (child or adult): a mattress of 90 x 190/200 cm.
- For a Full bed (1.5 places): a mattress of 120 x 190/200 cm.
- For a double bed: a mattress of 140 x 190/200 cm.
- For a Queen Size bed: a mattress of 160 x 200 cm.
- For a King Size bed: a mattress of 180 x 200 cm.
- For a King Size XL bed: a mattress of 200 x 200 cm.
How to choose the right density for your mattress?
What we call the density of a mattress refers to the measure determining the mass of the material on a designated surface. This choice criterion impacts the sleeper's comfort. In other words, a mattress with a density of 65kg/m3 indicates a filling of 65kg spread over 1m3.
Some types of mattress may have predefined densities, depending on their nature and design:
- Polyurethane foam mattresses can have a density ranging from 20 kg/m3 to 65kg/m3
- Latex mattresses, on the other hand, have a very high density, which can reach 100kg/m3
What mattress for back pain?
If you suffer from back pain, several criteria must be taken into account to choose your mattress and optimize your comfort:
- The technology and design of the mattress, whether it is memory foam, pocketed coils, or latex, all offer excellent support.
- The density of the mattress, which should be proportional to your weight and height. - The firmness of the mattress, ideally medium-firm.
- Comfort zones designed to support different parts of the body more or less firmly.
You now know everything, or almost! All that's left is to find the right mattress! As mentioned above, consider checking customer comments and reviews; they are good advice.

Post-purchase advice: how to clean a mattress?
Clean the entire mattress to avoid creating stains. For this, you can use white vinegar (which is generally an excellent disinfectant, combined with baking soda), hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda, a bit of ammonia for urine stains or rubbing alcohol for blood.
