Brass fittings are most often used to connect copper pipes together. However, their chemical properties also allow them to connect pipes made of different materials together.
Brass is truly multitasking: it can be welded and/or screwed. Most brass fittings have a thread on at least one of their ends, allowing them to be attached to another material (such as steel) or connected to a plumbing hose.
The solder brass fitting:
Brass fittings to be soldered can be done with either soft or hard soldering. However, be careful when installing the brass fitting with strong solder. Indeed, the melting temperature of brass is extremely close to that of the filler metal (copper or phosphorus), and you risk melting the brass fitting if you exceed the desired temperature.
The screw brass fitting:
There is a whole range of brass fittings. From the brass plug to the nipple, through the brass elbow. The screw brass fitting can be installed for a flared collar, or for quick connections. There are two types of quick connections: the brass bicone fitting and the American fitting, commonly called the Gripp fitting.
The bicone fitting (or olive) consists of a chamfered union fitting and a chamfered nut. The sealing is ensured by a brass olive which is pressed against the pipe.
The Gripp fitting, or American, uses a notched washer combined with a seal to ensure the sealing of the installation.
