The door threshold is the element fixed at the bottom of the entrance to a house, a building, an office, or a garage. Its primary purpose is to prevent discontinuities between the indoor and outdoor floor coverings. This element can be made of wood, metal, or plastic.
Being usable at the entrance, in the garage, or on certain gates, the door threshold serves several functions at the opening. It notably allows:
- to enhance the aesthetics of the opening by hiding ground discontinuities and by adding the brilliance characteristic of the material used (some models are true decorative items);
- to avoid wear and tear of the floor coverings at the junction;
- to act as an interior stop for the door leaf;
- to protect the entrance against unwanted infiltrations such as dust, water, insects, and rodents;
- to reduce the risk of accidents, as the bar enables a surface free of any snags (differently leveled parquet, raised linoleum, etc.);
- to limit thermal bridges and heat loss through the front door.
Depending on the model, this accessory can be:
- manufactured in wood, aluminum, stainless steel, brass, or flexible plastic;
- screwed in, intended for installation on a flat surface and reusable, even if the flooring is replaced;
- fixed by gluing, bar usable on vinyl, parquets, tiles, and linoleums (attention! It is absolutely necessary to degrease and clean the support before setting for optimal fixation of the glued bar);
- installed using invisible fixings (clips), suitable for vinyl and tiles, but incompatible with linoleums and carpets;
- designed with an anodized or galvanized finish, giving it a longer lifespan;
- offered in a removable version, to be screwed or with invisible fixation.
There are several types of door thresholds adapted to different situations, including:
- the stop bar, intended for French doors;
- the level bar, hiding and improving the junction between two floor coverings at the same level;
- the level compensation bar, allowing to offset the difference in level between different surfaces.
To find the most suitable door threshold for one's house, it is essential to consider its practical and aesthetic aspects. When installing, it is also necessary to check its alignment with the door to allow it to open and close correctly.
