Disinfecting water is an important step in maintaining a swimming pool. If this operation is omitted, the water becomes cloudy. The cleanliness of the pool suffers, and swimming in it will be discouraged. Among the products used in water treatment is chlorine disinfectant.
The 3 water disinfection solutions for a pool are:
- pool chlorine;
- non-chlorine solution with active oxygen;
- bromine.
Chlorine-based pool disinfectants effectively eliminate bacteria. They also prevent the proliferation of algae in the pool and its equipment. Chlorine is a chemical product that must be handled with caution. It is better to store it in a dry and cool place.
Note that:
- chlorine products designed for pool cleaning are effective and economical;
- they are easy to use and ensure crystal-clear water;
- some people may suffer from eye and skin irritations upon contact. For safe handling, it is advised to avoid overdosing.
Under the action of the sun, as well as microbes naturally present in the air, pool water degrades. Chlorine disinfectants are used to eliminate impurities and ensure the hygiene of the pool. These products come in the form of tablets, liquid, or granules.
The objective of chlorination is:
- to kill micro-organisms such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses;
- to eliminate organic matter through oxidation.
Besides disinfecting the water, controlling the chlorine level is also crucial. In too large quantities, this product accelerates the degradation of the different components of the pool and can be harmful to swimmers. The ideal chlorine level is between 1 and 2 mg/l.
Treating a pool with chlorine is insufficient to ensure pure, crystal-clear, and healthy water. In fact, other factors directly impact water quality:
- water balance;
- chlorine level;
- algaecide;
- flocculation.
The pH of pool water should ideally be between 7.2 and 7.4. In addition to conditioning the effectiveness of chlorine treatment products, it influences swimmers' comfort. Water that is too hard leads to limescale buildup in installations, pipes, linings, and equipment. To avoid these inconveniences, the water hardness or Th should be between 10 and 20 °F.
