Does your child, girl or boy, need a desk for playing and/or working on? It's up to you to choose from the many models available based on their age, needs, and the style of their room.
What height should a desk be?
The height and overall dimensions of a desk should be adapted to your child's age and body shape. There are desk models for children from an early age, from the end of kindergarten or first grade, up to teenagers.
- The desk's height should allow its surface to align with the child's elbows, which should be at a 90° angle for a comfortable working position.
- This same height should also allow the child to easily slide their legs under the surface. If this is no longer the case, it means your child has grown, and it's time for a new desk.
- The standard dimensions of a child’s desk are 60 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 70/75 cm in height.
What materials and colors for a child's desk?
A child's desk can be made from various materials and adorned with many patterns and colors.
- Wood, whether solid or not, is the most classic material for a child's desk, but be wary of scratches that little ones could easily make. Raw, wood adds a Scandinavian style to the room.
- PVC is lightweight and easy to clean. It comes in a wide range of colors and patterns, from white to fuchsia pink to red or violet.
- Metal, particularly durable, is also very easy to maintain and adds a touch of design to a child's desk.
What type of child's desk to choose?
You will have a choice among many types of desks for children so that it truly suits their tastes, but also their habits:
- The adjustable child's desk has the advantage of growing and evolving with them.
- The child's desk with integrated storage is particularly practical.
- The bed desk takes the form of a loft bed, with the space freed up on the floor then being occupied by a desk directly integrated into its structure.
- The child's desk with fun shapes and decorations, featuring licenses like Cars or Winnie the Pooh, combines practicality with playfulness.
- The old school desk, used until the 50s in primary schools, is now coming back into fashion.
How to organize a child's desk?
To be able to work there calmly, the child's desk should be as organized as possible. For this, besides the possible drawers and shelves included in the desk, you can add:
- Storage boxes or units to slide under the desk. They can even be on wheels for more mobility.
- Shelves and/or bookcases placed as close to the desk as possible.
- Boxes, open or closed, stackable or not.
- Letter trays for the older ones.
And don't forget to add a desk chair, comfortable and practical.
How to decorate a child's desk?
The decoration of a child's desk can be practical, playful, or both at the same time, but always distinguishing as much as possible between the work area and the play area:
- The child’s desk lamp is essential but can of course be a decorative element in itself. The only requirement being that the lighting is powerful enough.
- A blackboard or a magnetic board allows the child to note or hang up their schedule, grammar rules, etc.
- Colorful stickers can brighten up the atmosphere.
- Fun shelves will be a practical plus.
- A beautiful rug is ideal for visually delineating the desk space.
