What style of child's bed to choose?
There are numerous styles of children's beds, for girls as well as boys:
- The classic child's bed, with its bed base and four legs. It’s the most basic and the least expensive. For a decorative touch at a low price, it can be enhanced with a canopy.
- The child's bed with storage features one or more large sliding drawers placed under the bed base. Convenient, it allows you to store duvet covers, blankets, and anything you wish to hide away.
- Bunk beds for children, perfect for saving floor space if you have a little tribe and limited room.
- The loft bed or elevated bed makes it possible to free up the space under the bed for a play area or a desk space, for example. It is equipped, just like bunk beds, with a ladder for access and a rail to prevent any risk of falling.
- The combined bed incorporates directly into its structure a mid-height bed and a desk and/or storage area.
- The convertible bed is a bed that grows, step by step, at the same time as the child thanks to an extendable bed base
- The daybed is particularly popular among teenagers since it serves both as a bed and a sofa.
- The Montessori bed is a child's bed designed to be very easily accessible. Therefore, it can take the form of a simple mattress placed on the floor.
- The guest bed allows your child to easily welcome a friend. It can be a trundle bed, where the free space under the bed is occupied by a second bed base, or a folding bed or even an inflatable bed.
- Car bed, hut bed, teepee bed, slide bed… there are also many models of beds that are both comfortable and fun.
What dimensions to choose for your child's bed?
Each age has its bed size:
- A bed of 70 x 140 cm is suitable for a child from 18/24 months up to their 6-7 years. Many of these children's beds are moreover convertible.
- A bed of 90 x 190 cm or 90 x 200 cm, which corresponds to the size of a one-person adult bed, is suitable from the child's 5-6 years.
What materials to choose for a child's bed?
The child's bed can be made from various materials:
- Solid wood is the most commonly used material in the manufacture of a child's bed. It is sturdy and easy to renovate by simple sanding. It is available both naturally and in white or colors.
- HDE and MDF (high or medium-density fiberboards), as well as laminated products, are also frequently used because they are easy to work with and allow a multitude of finishes. However, be careful with the level of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) which should be as low as possible.
Which mattress for a child's bed?
You will have a choice between 3 main mattress technologies. But whichever one is chosen, the dimensions of your mattress should always be the same as those of your bed base.
- The foam mattress, preferably polyurethane, offers good support for a reasonable price.
- The latex mattress, natural or synthetic, is more elastic and naturally anti-mite.
- The spring mattress, multi-coil or pocket sprung, distributes the child's body weight well across the entire mattress, with moreover excellent ventilation.
