For a casual use DIY drill the 996 is a bit of a beast. It's bigger, heavier, has more torque and speed control so is better suited to heavier work. I haven't had chance to do much with it yet so I'm limited on longevity etc but the quality is what you'd expect. By choice for most use as a keen DIY'er I'd go for the 796 which I also own and have used extensively for the last 3 years. Smaller, lighter but still all metal gearbox and better suited for driving screws even this has proved to have a bit too much torque for smaller screws. The 996 will get used for my heavier work so I'm expecting it to last as long as me
