As its name suggests, an engine stand is a tool used in workshops to support a car engine during its maintenance or repair. It is suitable for engines of small cars, 4x4s, or large-displacement sedans, and it is accessible to individuals passionate about automotive mechanics.
First and foremost, it's important to clarify that an engine stand is designed to support a car engine that has been removed (taken out of the bonnet). Under no circumstances can it be used to lift an engine. This workshop tool consists of 3 parts.
- A mounting plate on which the engine to be repaired is attached. It can pivot to facilitate access to the lower part of the engine if needed.
- A vertical arm for elevating the engine to optimize the comfort of the mechanics working on it.
- A wheeled base facilitating the movement of the entire setup.
The installation of the engine on this tool is carried out in a few steps.
- The operation starts with the removal of the transmission and clutch kits.
- The engine is extracted from the car using a lifting crane.
- The mounting plate (alone) is attached to the engine via the transmission anchorage points. The tightening of the bolts (those of the transmission) is done with a torque wrench, respecting the torque prescribed in the notice provided by the manufacturer.
- The mounting plate/engine assembly is fixed to the stand’s axis. The lifting crane and a few extra arms are very helpful during this step.
- Simply rotate the engine and lock it in the optimal position using a clamping screw or a pin to start working.
Some criteria should be considered when choosing this equipment.
- The models available are distinguished by their load capacity. Indeed, an engine of a 4x4 or of a large displacement weighs much more than an engine of a small car. The choice therefore depends on the type of vehicle to be repaired.
- Price is also a factor to consider in the choice. Varying from €50 to €200, it primarily depends on the load capacity of the selected equipment.
Thus, the chosen model must be capable of supporting the weight of the engine to be repaired. It is worth noting that an engine stand with a load capacity of 400 kg is suitable for most car engines.
