Description
1) Reliable protection of final circuits (without residual current function)This 1P 20 A miniature circuit breaker (MCB) is designed for the protection of final circuits in a consumer unit, whether in a home, small shop or modest-sized office. Its main role is to automatically interrupt the power supply in the event of an overload (current that is too high over a prolonged period, for example too many appliances on the same line) or a short circuit (a sudden and very high overcurrent). By quickly cutting the circuit, it limits conductor heating, premature ageing of insulation and helps reduce the risk of electrical incidents. Please note: this model is non-residual current, with no protection against current leakage. It therefore does not replace a residual current device (RCD/RCCB) or a residual current circuit breaker with overcurrent protection (RCBO) when protection of people against insulation faults is required.2) Essential electrical characteristics, 1P 20 A format for single-phase circuitsWith its 1P (single-pole) configuration, this circuit breaker is intended to protect one phase on a 230 V single-phase circuit, typically for socket outlets, lighting or lines dedicated to certain equipment (depending on the load assessment). Its 20 A rating corresponds to a nominal current suited to many common uses requiring a higher current than a light circuit, provided that the conductor cross-section and the installation design are consistent with this rating. The stated AC 230–400 V voltage range allows integration into usual electrical environments (230 V single-phase and certain 400 V network contexts, bearing in mind that a 1P protects only one phase). Compatible with 50/60 Hz, it is suitable for standard networks.3) C tripping curve, stable at start-up, fast protection in the event of a faultThe C curve is a very common choice in Europe for circuits with mixed loads or with inrush current at start-up (e.g. switch-mode power supplies, small motors, transformers, certain household appliances). It offers a good compromise: fewer nuisance trips during start-up, while still ensuring effective disconnection when the overcurrent becomes abnormal. This characteristic makes the product relevant for circuits where both continuity of service and safety are sought, provided that sizing rules are respected (cables, upstream protection, required breaking capacity at the installation point, etc.).4) 6 kA breaking capacity and EN 60898-1 compliance, a European regulatory basisThe 6 kA breaking capacity indicates the circuit breaker’s ability to safely interrupt a short-circuit current of up to 6,000 A (under standardised conditions). This level is frequently used for domestic consumer units and small commercial installations, but it must always be compared with the prospective short-circuit current of the installation. The product is stated to comply with EN 60898-1, the European reference standard for circuit breakers intended for domestic and similar installations, covering in particular tripping performance, endurance and certain safety criteria. This compliance helps integration into a European-style selection approach, with regulatory consistency and expected behaviour in operation.5) Advice for use in a consumer unit, choosing the rating, coordination and adding residual current protection if necessaryThis MCB is typically used as a protective and isolating device for an outgoing way in a consumer unit. The 20 A rating must be chosen according to the actual load and above all the wire cross-section: a circuit breaker rated too high may allow a cable to overheat before tripping, while a rating that is too low may cause repeated disconnections. Installation and tightening of conductors must be carried out properly, avoiding any poor contact that could cause heating. Finally, as this is a non-residual current circuit breaker, it is recommended to add residual current protection upstream or to choose a dedicated residual current solution for areas and circuits where protection of people is expected, bathrooms, accessible sockets, outdoors, damp environments, etc. In this way, overcurrent protection (MCB) and insulation fault protection (RCD/RCBO) complement each other for a safer installation that complies with good practice.
