A slight smoke is normal and will disappear quickly. Insert the tin wire into the opening and pull the trigger to melt the wire at the nozzle. To stop use or replace the solder wire, release the trigger and remove the solder wire. To replace the heating element, remove the protective cover and disconnect the heating element.
