Description

Main Features: Botanical Name: Zea mays var. ornementalis Variety: 'Pineapple' Type: Annual plant Number of Seeds: 300 Sowing Time: April to May, after the last frosts Maturity: 70 to 90 days after sowing Height: 100–150 cm (more compact than conventional sweet corn) Location: Full sun Hardiness: Not hardy (freezes in winter) Description: Ornamental corn 'Pineapple' is an original variety valued for its compact small ears that resemble a strawberry or pineapple. When ripe, the kernels take on a reddish to purple hue, offering unique garden decoration. This variety is suitable for both open ground cultivation and large pots. Uses: Ornamental plant for beds and containers Decorative ears for dried bouquets and floral arrangements Young ears edible (though less sweet than sweet corn) Sowing and Cultivation: Sowing: Time: Sow outdoors in April-May when temperatures reach at least 12–15°C. In colder regions, pre-cultivation in pots under cover from March is recommended. Depth: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep. Spacing: Place seeds 30–40 cm apart in the row. Row spacing 50–60 cm. Germination: Germination takes 7 to 14 days depending on soil temperature. Cultivation: Soil: Rich in organic matter, deep, and well-drained. Watering: Regular, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil moist but avoid waterlogging. Care: Hill up the plants when they are 20–30 cm tall to promote good anchorage. Remove weeds. Pollination: Corn is wind-pollinated. To obtain beautiful, well-formed ears, cultivate at least 2–3 plants close together to promote good cross-pollination. Harvest and Use: For consumption: Harvest young ears before the kernels become hard. The taste is less sweet than conventional sweet corn. For decoration: Allow the ears to fully ripen on the plant. When the silks turn brown and the kernels are firm, cut the ears and dry them in an airy, dry place. Packaging: 300 seeds.
